When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor. It’s to enjoy each step along the way.... -Wayne Dyer

Ages 7-9yrs Class Descriptions for the 2019/20 Season

Ballet 1:

Classical ballet is the foundation for all other styles of dance. This class will help students develop poise, grace, and balance. Students will progress to pointe with the teacher's guidance and approval. Dancers will perform in the spring performance series with this class.

Variations Apprentice Company:

This is for the serious student who would like additional performance opportunities in addition to our culminating Spring performance.  Company members will participate in our Annual Nutcracker performance series in December and our Company Performance for the spring. All students enrolled in the Company course must also be taking the ballet course at Variations.  Please select this option to receive more information about our Company program.

Jazz 1:

Jazz is a fun and energetic type of dance. We will work to upbeat popular music and strongly emphasize technique. We will work on strengthening and conditioning as well as learning the latest dance moves. Dancers will perform in the spring performance series with this class.

Lyrical 1:

Lyrical/Contemporary is a style of dance that mixes ballet and jazz steps to create fluid, yet technical movements. We will work on strengthening the performance quality of each student while focusing on technique. As dancers grow and mature, so does the dancing in lyrical/contemporary classes, focusing on story telling and emotion behind movement and choreography. Dancers will perform in the spring performance series with this class.

Broadway:

The Broadway class is an upbeat dance class focusing on jazz technique with Broadway-style choreography with a focus on performance, stage presence, and musicality. Emphasis will also be placed on learning performance skills such as connecting with the audience and telling a story. This is a great class for students interested in Musical Theatre. Dancers will perform in the spring performance series with this class.

Hip Hop 1:

The Hip Hop class is a high energy dance class teaching coordination, rhythm, and balance through age appropriate movements set to fun upbeat music. Dancers will improve flexibility and coordination through fun and age appropriate movements and exercises. Hip Hop instills rhythm and helps young dancers focus on patterning while developing muscle memory. This class has basic movement concepts such as levels, space, and tempo, while also beginning to develop muscle strength and movement awareness. Dancers will perform in the spring performance series with this class.

Stretch 1:

Dancers will further their knowledge of stretching with a focus on correct placement and form as dancers grow and improve. All classes will begin with stretching during warm up, but this class allows for further understanding of how to properly stretch while lengthening muscles correctly. There will be a focus on the anatomy of their stretching to deepen their knowledge. Dancers will improve flexibility and be able to have specific exercises to continue working on their own outside of class. This course is an additional class, and does not include a performance at the end of the year.
