Ages 9+ Class Descriptions
Classical ballet is the foundation for all other styles of dance. This class will help students develop poise, grace, and balance. Students will progress to pointe with the teacher's guidance and approval. Please note, this course does not participate in the culminating Spring performance, as it will focus on ballet technique throughout the year.
Pre-pointe is designed to strengthen ballet students who wish to advance to pointe and ballet students who want to continue their pointe training. Students must be nine years of age to take pre-pointe. Students must also have this class to progress to pointe. This course does not participate in the culminating Spring performance.
Pointe classes are designed for students with previous ballet training. Students must have permission prior to starting pointe. Students will utilize previously learned ballet technique while working in pointe shoes. Pointe class will include barre exercises, center floor work and across the floor combinations. These exercises focus on strengthening the feet and ankles. This course does not participate in the culminating Spring performance.
This is for the serious student who would like additional performance opportunities in addition to our culminating Spring performance. Company members will participate in our Annual Nutcracker performance series in December and our Company Performance Series in the Spring. All students enrolled in the Company course must also be taking the ballet course at Variations. Dancers who wish to perform in the spring performance series, but do not wish to participate in The Nutcracker, can join this course beginning in January, but will have to order their costume in the fall. Please select this option to receive more information about our Company program.
Jazz is a fun and energetic type of dance. We will work to upbeat popular music and strongly emphasize technique. We will work on strengthening and conditioning as well as learning the latest dance moves.
Lyrical/Contemporary is a style of dance that mixes ballet and jazz steps to create fluid, yet technical movements. We will work on strengthening the performance quality of each student while focusing on technique. As dancers grow and mature, so does the dancing in lyrical/contemporary classes, focusing on story telling and emotion behind movement and choreography.
Leaps and Turns
This is an additional jazz technique class that does not include a performance at the end of the year. Dancers will focus specifically on the techniques and fundamentals of leaps and turns throughout the year, while improving flexibility, alignment and movement quality. This course does not participate in the culminating Spring performance.
This is class that allows dancers the opportunity to grow and learn various styles throughout the year. There is not a performance for this class, as the styles will change weekly. Dancers will be exposed to the following styles throughout the year: Improv, Broadway, Hip Hop, Tap, Dance Team Prep, Acro/Tumbling and many more exciting styles. Dancers will be able to diversify themselves throughout the year through exposure to various styles and teachers. This course does not participate in the culminating Spring performance.
Dancers will further their knowledge of stretching with a focus on correct placement and form as dancers grow and improve. All classes will begin with stretching during warm up, but this class allows for further understanding of how to properly stretch while lengthening muscles correctly. There will be a focus on the anatomy of their stretching to deepen their knowledge. Dancers will improve flexibility and be able to have specific exercises to continue working on their own outside of class. This course is an additional class, and does not include a performance at the end of the year.
Conditioning for Dancers:
Dancers will learn how to properly condition their bodies while correctly improving their stamina. Dancers use their bodies differently that other athletes and proper conditioning is important for endurance throughout classes and performances. Core, upper body and leg strength will be developed in a fast-paced environment to improve cardio as well as muscular endurance. Dancers will learn how to tone and strengthen muscles correctly to ensure safe and correctly alignment, placement in their bodies. This course is an additional class, and does not include a performance at the end of the year.
Variations Competition Team
Auditions for the Competition Team will take place in May 2019 (Date TBA). The Competition Team is an additional competitive performance opportunity that allows for our students to travel and be exposed to various instructors in the commercial industry. Members must be participating in the Variations Company program and be enrolled in Jazz to be considered for the Competition Team. Please select this course option to receive more information about the team expectations, requirements, and audition information.
